Carnot, Nicolas Leonard Sadi
(1796-1832), French founder of the science of thermodynamics, retired in 1819 from the French army to pursue a study of steam engine efficiency. He published Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire in 1824, which was eventually incorporated into the work of Rudolf Clausius in Germany (1850) and William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) in Britain (1851). He was born June 1, 1796, Paris, and died Aug. 24, 1832, Paris.
