Boyden, Seth
(1788-1870), U.S. inventor and manufacturer, patented a variety of machines involving shaving leather (18009), cutting brads (1815), harness and horse blinds (1824), spinning wool and cotton (1826), malleable iron castings (1831), and later agricultural machines. For a time he built steam engines and introduced several rail-related innovations, including a governor-controlled cut-off valve to replace the throttle in controlling engine speed (unpatented). He is credited with making the first daguerreotype in the United States and with helping Samuel Morse. Brother to Uriah Boyden, he was born Nov. 17, 1788, Foxborough, Massachusetts, and died March 31, 1870, Middleville or Hilton, New Jersey.
