Blanchard, Thomas
(1788-1864), U.S. machinist, invented a lathe for turning and finishing gun barrels in one operation, for which he is best known. His many other inventions included a machine that made 500 tacks a minute (1812), 13 machines for stocking of arms, eccentric lathe for turning irregular forms, a steam carriage (1825), a steamboat that could ascend the rapids of the Connecticut River (1826), a process for bending timber (1836) and a cutting and folding machine for envelopes. He was born June 24, 1788, Sutton, Massachusetts, and died April 16, 1864, Boston, Massachusetts.
