Bessemer, Sir Henry
| (1813-1898), British mechanical engineer and inventor, developed the first process for manufacturing steel inexpensively (1856). The Bessemer process blasted compressed air through molten iron to burn out excess carbon and impurities. He held more than 100 British patents. He was born Jan. 19, 1813, Charlton, Hertfordshire, England, and died March 15, 1898, London. (See also Alexander Holley, who bought the patent rights and brought the Bessemer process to the United States and William Kelley from Pennsylvania who challenged Holley?s patent rights.) |
