ASME History and Heritage, in 1987, added the designation categories of Heritage Sites and Heritage Collections as alternatives to "landmarks," even though we tend to call all designations landmarks for ease of discussion. The site and collection categories enable the program to recognize, respectively, either exceptional holdings that as a body were significant yet were not necessarily "landmark artifacts" or major events that no longer had relevant artifacts existing. Nominators should note that the museums are small, single-theme of a type of technology, and the sites generally accompany a permanent display of some sort.
