Proclamation From IMechE [10] Continuing to your left of the entrance door, opposite the staircase on the 23rd floor-- Immediately to your left, the oil portrait of John E. Sweet (1832-1916), a prominent founder, past president (1883-1884) and honorary member, was a gift from past president Ambrose Swasey (ASME honorary member).

Next, the oil portrait of Henry Rossiter Worthington (1817-1880), inventor, hydraulic engineer and pre-eminent authority in the design and construction of pumping engines, by a Miss Huger was presented to ASME by his son Charles C. Worthington. Worthington was a prominent founding member of ASME, who served as vice president in 1880.

Just beyond the Worthington portrait is the Hoover Medal Plaque, commemorating recipients of this prestigious intersociety award, which recognizes public service. The Hoover Medal is named for U.S. President Herbert Hoover, honorary member of ASME.

Within a few steps to the right is the library--Along the walls are a 2-dimensional Great Wall of China memento from the Chinese mechanical engineering society, a relief image of Henry Laurence Gantt for whom the Gantt Medal is named, and three lithographs (see the 22nd floor hall for more): Franz Grashof (1826-1893, ASME honorary member); Sir Charles Algernon Parsons (1854-1931, ASME honorary member); and James Watt (1736-1819), Scottish engineer and inventor (previously described).

The library display cases and bookcases contain a constantly growing collection of mementos, so varied as to include a pair of German steins commemorating the Society's trip to Europe in 1913, a pewter flask from the Institution of Engineers of Ireland (1994), and the 1996 ASAE Award of Excellence for ASME's Russian Academy of Sciences Partnership.

Outside the library door are the photographs of the current president (left) and of living past presidents of the Society (right). Continue past these photographs and, left, around the corner to the President's Room--Similar to the one in the reception area of the executive director's office is a hand-illustrated proclamation from The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), dated 1904, on the occasion of a visit to the United States [10].
