8:30 AM Welcome/Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8:35 AM – 9:20 AM Effective Communication in the Workplace Presenter: Alaina M. Pizzo, Ph.D., Systems Design Engineer, Philips Medical System
In today’s workforce, communication is a key component of success and advancement. When one thinks of communication skills, writing and speaking immediately come to mind; just as important, though, are reading and listening skills. Good communication necessitates clarity of expression, capability to organize thoughts, ability to be a good listener, and empathy for the interests of others. Strengthening the engineer's communication skills not only ensures quality, accuracy, and upward mobility, but also protects the reputation of the engineering profession. To promote that, this session will explore how to lead and participate in effective meetings, and communication in small versus large groups.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9:20 AM – 9:30 AM Break -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM What path is right for you… Technical or Management Panel of Presenters: - Sebastian Pierini, PMP, 747-8 Propulsion Support and Services, Boeing Commercial Aviation Services - Steve Montgomery, Ph.D, Manager, Intel - Sriram Somasundaram, Ph.D, Staff Scientist, Battelle Pacific Northwest Lab
Should you pursue a career in management? Management requires a number of business skills that are not covered in engineering school, yet engineers want to move in to management within 5 years of starting their careers. The management career path offers rewards unattainable to the engineer who concentrates purely upon technical development. But are there reasons to stay technical. This session will relate the experience of an engineer who began his career in a highly technical area, then became a manager, but has since returned to engineering. We will explore the advantages and disadvantages inherent in each career choice, with an engineer who has taken the management path and another who decided to build their career on the technical side. If you have ever wondered about a possible career move into management, or even if you have never considered it as a serious possibility, then this session is for you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Lunch Break (on your own) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12:00 PM – 12:45 PM Essential Conversations: Using conversations with your manager to jumpstart your career Presenter: Brent Barclay, Managing Partner, Targeted Learning
Your manager has the potential to be a powerful ally as you define and grow your career. Unfortunately, too often that potential goes untapped. After all, if she/he does not know where you want to go, she/he cannot help you get there! This session will reinforce the importance of seeking and receiving feedback as the means for more effective “career conversations” with your manager, give you practical tools for preparing and planning for these conversations and include tips on overcoming anxiety and being assertive about your career goals. Employing these strategies will provide you with the ability to jumpstart your career through having essential conversations with your manager and welcoming her/him as a partner and mentor in your career development.
