Join an ASME Codes & Standards Committee
  • It is ASME’s policy to afford all persons with direct and material interest, without regard to country of citizenship or residency, the opportunity to participate in the ASME Codes & Standards development process.

  • Membership on a committee normally represents you as an individual, rather than as a representative of your employer or another organization.

  • The introduction of the ASME Delegate Program now also allows for an organized group of interested experts, located outside the U.S. and Canada, to directly participate in the ASME Codes and Standards development process. Click here for additional details.

  • Membership limits and qualifications vary by committee, and there may not be openings on the desired committee at the time of your submission.

  • It is recommended that you first contact the staff engineer prior to submitting the membership application package to ASME.  Click here if you do not know the appropriate staff engineer.

  • Click here to learn the benefits of participating in ASME Codes & Standards activities.

  • Click here to find ASME committees that are actively soliciting participation.

Selection/Acceptance Criteria

Individual Members

To ensure that ASME’s Codes & Standards are developed in accordance with the procedures accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), individual membership appointments are based on various criteria, including:

  • Experience and technical qualifications.

  • Ability to actively participate in committee activities.

  • Business interest of the organization, if any, that supports the member’s committee participation (interest classification.)

  • The balance of the committee.

  • Membership limits of the committee.

At the discretion of the committee, applicants may be requested to attend one or more meeting prior to being considered for membership.

Delegates

Delegates proposed for appointment are selected by the group to represent its interests and provide collective group comments on committee standards actions. Primarily, the delegate will be selected based on his/her fluency in the English language, along with a working knowledge of the technical aspects of the committee’s work.

Application Forms

(Some committees require an additional application.  Please contact the appropriate staff engineer)

When applying to ASME for appointment of a Delegate, the group must describe its organization and purpose in writing. The group shall provide the names and affiliations of the technical experts that will be working with the Delegate to provide the group’s input to the ASME committee.

Upon receipt, your application will be acknowledged by the appropriate staff engineer and distributed to the existing committee membership for consideration.  Please note that ASME staff is not responsible for making appointment decisions.
