Six months ago, using the former Technical Executives Conference model, the 2006 Leadership Training Conference (LTC) “flame” was lit.  With the efforts of a volunteer-staff team of 19, a diverse program was devised to provide leadership tools and examples of their use.  Teaching concepts and encouraging dialogue and networking was the focus.  Then, knowing that many units have felt isolated in the new ASME, there was a hope that a bonding experience would bring a much needed and renewed energy.

Many came to bear their burdens about support that seemed to be little in the face of ASME changes not understood.  Some wondered what could possibly happen in one weekend to help their units.

Under the umbrella of “Communities in Action,” LTC brought ASME leaders together to realize their common interests and concerns while providing a forum for making a difference in ASME.  With over 100 sections and 31 technical divisions represented, leaders learned to be positive in moving forward so that:

  1. When there are problems — we seek solutions
  2. When it seems there is only one way — we are creative and seek alternatives
  3. When we think we are alone — we seek partners to share the load
  4. When we are in need of help — we communicate within our ASME network and
  5. When we are looking for ideas — we know to effectively use our ASME resources

Working together and communicating in pairs and groups, everyone learned that we share concerns, what has worked for others may work for us, and ASME has many resources — both tools and people — available to create programs and help generate revenues.  The real change in ASME is from relied-upon support to one of forged partnerships and alliances.

The true test of LTC will be beyond the weekend — how do we extend the enthusiasm to our members.  What new successes can we initiate and deliver.  LTC folks must keep in touch and share progress to keep the “LTC flame” burning.
